A sail wagon, a wheeled carriage driven by wind on a large sail, was an unusual sight on the flat shorelines and open roads around Brooklyn. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency active in New York from the early 1900s, produced glass negatives like this one for newspapers and magazines, so its pictures caught many of the city's passing novelties. The title comes from the agency's own caption cards and has not been independently verified, so the exact location and date remain uncertain. Even so, the picture offers a glimpse of early recreational machinery on the edge of a rapidly growing borough.
