Ashkelon, the Mediterranean port that the Hebrew Bible counts among the five chief Philistine cities, is the subject here, drawn as David Roberts saw it during his 1839 journey through the region. Roberts sketched on the spot, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into color lithographs for *The Holy Land*, published in London by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. The series made Roberts's views of biblical sites familiar to a wide British audience. Its appeal lay in pairing archaeological interest with religious devotion, a combination typical of the period's travel imagery.
