The Old Dutch Market was one of the public markets that served Washington residents in the early twentieth century, when neighborhood stalls and market houses supplied much of the city's fresh food. This exterior view was made on an 8 by 6 inch glass negative by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital in the years around 1920. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Viewers should note the streaks and blemishes on the plate, which come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
