Storefront glass and painted lettering are the main subjects here: a shop window at 906 G Street Northwest bearing the name of the Old Dutch Market Company. The National Photo Company made the picture, and in the early twentieth century that firm documented Washington's streets, businesses and public buildings on glass negatives. Its date of about 1920 is an estimate based on negatives from the same group, so it places the scene in the years just after World War I. The streaks and blemishes visible on the negative come from the gradual breakdown of its original coating, a common condition for glass plates of this age.
