Center Market's 9th Street wing shows part of the sprawling public market complex that supplied Washington households for decades. The market opened in 1871 and stood at the center of the city's daily food trade until it was demolished in 1931 to clear the site for the Federal Triangle. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, whose photographers documented the capital in the early twentieth century. It survives as a glass negative with streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is a reminder of how fragile these plates are.
