A storefront on Seventh Street in Washington, D.C., sets this glass negative apart, with its display window and the business name Berbench given in the title. The National Photo Company, which worked in the capital in the early twentieth century, recorded the city's streets, shops and daily commerce, and views like this one show how merchants arranged their goods for passersby around 1920. The shop name comes from data attached to the negative and has not been independently verified, so treat it as a lead rather than settled fact. Streaks and blemishes across the 8 by 6 inch plate come from natural deterioration of its original coating.
