The subject here is a street site rather than a building photographed for its architecture: the title names the former location of the Dutch Legation on 15th Street NW in Washington. In the early 1920s, foreign legations were scattered through the capital's downtown and Dupont Circle districts, and the Netherlands mission was one of many that moved between rented houses as Washington's diplomatic corps grew. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented the city's streets and buildings in the early twentieth century, made this 8 x 6 inch glass negative, and its catalog title and date are unverified. The record also notes streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of the original coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age.
