The Woodward & Lothrop department store was one of the best-known retailers in downtown Washington during the early twentieth century, and this view shows its exterior when it was a fixture of the city's shopping district. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a firm that recorded many street and building scenes in the capital between about 1910 and 1930, much of it made for sale to the public. Department stores like this one drew shoppers by streetcar and on foot, so their storefronts offer a useful glimpse of how Washingtonians shopped in those years.
