A downtown landmark on F Street, the Woodward & Lothrop department store is the subject of this exterior view, taken between 1910 and 1920. The store, founded in 1880, grew into one of the city's best-known retailers and drew shoppers from across the District. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington streets and buildings in these years, made the picture, and it offers a useful look at how the commercial core of the capital appeared before the 1920s.
