This is a very small printed ballot, about 2.3 by 3.3 centimeters, that carries the name "Jackson" alongside the phrase "American system" and the line "Speed the plough, the loom & the mattock." In the 1820s, parties printed their own tickets for voters to carry to the polls, so a slip this size could be folded and handed in as a vote. The phrase "American system" refers to the economic program associated with Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams, which supported tariffs and internal improvements. The line about the plow, loom, and mattock invokes farming, manufacturing, and labor, and the woodcut image and letterpress text were combined in one tiny sheet.
