Few pictures on this board set the same man against himself, but this one shows Andrew Jackson at 49 and at 78, placing two stages of his life side by side. Jackson was born in 1767, so the older face belongs to his final years at the Hermitage in Tennessee, where he died in 1845. The sheet's date of c1848 falls several years after his death, so it was likely made from earlier portraits rather than from life. Its comparison would have been familiar to viewers who remembered his long public career, which included his two terms as president from 1829 to 1837.
