Sweetheart Abbey, near Dumfries in southwest Scotland, takes its name from Devorguilla of Galloway, who founded the Cistercian abbey in 1273 and had her embalmed heart buried there after her death in 1290. This color view is a photochrom, a process that used photographs transferred to multiple lithographic stones, and the Detroit Publishing Co. sold such prints in America in the early 1900s. The image shows the red sandstone ruins as tourists of the late Victorian era would have seen them, a record of both the abbey and the popular taste for picturesque Scottish scenery.
