Toledo's Union Railroad Elevator Company is the specific subject here, a grain-handling operation on the Maumee River shoreline in northwestern Ohio. This 1882 color lithograph, printed by the Calvert Lithographing Company in Detroit, was made as an advertisement, and it shows the elevator alongside ships, boats, carts and wagons that moved grain in and out of the city. Toledo was a major grain port in the 1880s, with rail lines and lake shipping converging at the elevators, so the scene captures how crops from the interior passed through the city on their way to eastern and overseas markets.
