Here a foreman named Pia Maradiaga, who had spent 48 years on the job, stands in the midst of banana transport for the Tela Railroad Company in Honduras. The company ran the rail lines that carried fruit from plantations to the coast, and the banana trade of that era depended on such crews moving heavy loads quickly before the fruit spoiled. The photograph was taken in October 1948 and appeared in Unifruitco, the trade publication of the United Fruit Company, which had close ties to the Tela Railroad. Its record in the Library of Congress describes a man whose long service and authority over the work make him a telling figure of the period's fruit economy.
