The large glass negative shows the battleship *Kentucky*, one of the Kearsarge-class ships the United States built in the 1890s as it expanded its fleet beyond the wooden and cruiser-heavy navy of the Civil War era. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its views of American landscapes, cities and ships, produced and sold scenes like this one. Its 11 by 14 inch format gives the hull and rigging unusual detail, and the company's catalog listing and the attribution to Hart help place it in the firm's output around the turn of the century.
