Pasadena, California, in 1908 was a citrus town and winter retreat that drew wealthy visitors from the East and Midwest. The Raymond Hotel, a large resort on the edge of town near the railroad, was among the places where those guests stayed for weeks at a time, walking its lawns and gardens while the surrounding valley was planted in orange and lemon groves. Pasadena had incorporated as a city only in 1886, and in the decades after, its residents built their identity around climate, horticulture, and leisure, which they promoted to newcomers through hotels, boosters, and the annual Tournament of Roses. The hotel's grounds and nearby avenues in this view show a community that depended on tourism and fruit as much as on its growing population of permanent residents.
