Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper ran this wood engraving, "Passing the inspecting physician," in January 1866, showing arriving passengers going through a medical check before they could be cleared to land. In 1866, New York's immigrant processing took place at Castle Garden, not at Ellis Island, which did not open until 1892. The scene predates the station this board is named for, but the health inspection it shows became a standard part of the arrival process there too.
