Uncle Sam greets a comrade in this 1917 recruiting poster, and the flags of Belgium and the United States stand side by side. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917, and posters like this one tried to make enlistment feel like membership in a shared cause with the Allies. Belgium was a natural symbol, since Germany's invasion of its neutral territory in August 1914 was a central grievance in Allied propaganda. The title, "Welcome comrade-at-arms!", presents service as fellowship rather than obligation. The lithographer's monogram is unidentified, so the artist remains unknown.
