Eight numbered figures of individual rifle components share a single copper plate, which is the first page of an album of eighteen plates that accompanied Ferdinand Wolf's treatise on making hand firearms. The record credits the drawing to F. Wolf, identified as a captain from Baden, and the engraving was printed in Karlsruhe in 1832 by Christian Theodor Gross. Technical plates like this one were meant to be read alongside the text, so each part is shown separately for a craftsman to measure and copy. The album reflects the 1830s, when gunsmiths in German states were refining rifled weapons and printed manuals were a common way to share those methods.
