Rather than showing a single state's seal, this color lithograph gathers the arms of the states and territories of the Union onto one sheet. It was printed in New York by A.J. Connell around 1876, the year of the nation's centennial, when many printers produced patriotic displays that celebrated the country's growth. Each arms or seal was a small emblem of local identity, often combining symbols such as eagles, shields, sheaves of grain, and mottoes. The sheet also records the copyright registration noted on the print, which shows that publishers were protecting such decorative works as the market for them grew.
