The Great Seal of the United States is the national emblem that Congress adopted in 1782 and that appears on official documents such as treaties, commissions, and passports. This color lithograph, printed in Washington, D.C., by Andrew B. Graham, reproduces the seal's familiar elements: the bald eagle holding an olive branch and a bundle of thirteen arrows, with a shield on its breast and a motto ribbon above. Graham's firm was among the many commercial lithographers in the capital in the late nineteenth century, producing decorative prints for offices, schools, and homes. Its date range of roughly 1850 to 1910 places it in an era when the seal was reproduced widely in patriotic imagery.
