Macy's was one of the largest department stores in the world when this view was made, and the company's name appears on the glass negative itself. Around 1908, Detroit Publishing Company was sending photographers across the country to record city streets and storefronts for postcards and tourist albums, and this scene of the store and its surrounding street reflects that commercial interest in New York's busy retail district. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, a format that gave the sharp detail and wide tonal range prized for architectural views. It passed through the State Historical Society of Colorado before reaching the Library of Congress in 1949.
