The Bank of Columbia, shown here in a watercolor dated 1839, stands in Georgetown, a port town that had housed the institution since the early republic. In the late 1830s Georgetown was still a separate municipality, a busy shipping point on the Potomac for tobacco and grain, and it would not be absorbed into Washington until 1871. The record also tags the scene with horseback riding, a reminder that saddle travel was a common sight on town streets before railroads and streetcars reshaped city life. The picture offers a useful glimpse of everyday commercial life in the capital's older neighbor.
