Ellis Island, in New York Harbor, is the place most people picture when they think of immigration to the United States. Between 1892 and 1954, the federal immigrant inspection station on the island processed millions of arrivals, most of them coming by steamship from Europe. Newcomers faced medical checks and legal questioning before they could enter the country, and the great hall where these exams took place remains one of the most recognizable interiors in American history. Color views of the island tend to show its red brick buildings against the water and the Manhattan skyline beyond.
