The sitter's name and regiment, T.C.H. Smith of the 1st Ohio Cavalry, come from a note on the negative's sleeve that has not been verified. The image is a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required a photographer to coat, sensitize and expose a glass plate before the coating dried, which made both studio and field work demanding. The recorded date of 1860 falls before the war, so the cavalry label may reflect a later identification rather than the moment the picture was made. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866, and the negative now belongs to a Civil War glass negative collection at the Library of Congress.
