Brooklyn's 1889 team is the one pictured here, and the studio imprint on the print places its making on Fulton Street, one of the busiest commercial thoroughfares in the borough. The club had a strong season that year, winning the American Association pennant, and team portraits like this one were often sold to fans eager to put a favorite club on the wall. Baseball was then in its early professional era, when players were still stepping into formal studio poses, and the staged, upright arrangement of a group like this reflects the conventions of late nineteenth-century portrait photography.
