Believed by baseball historian Paul Dickson to be the earliest photograph of an indoor baseball team, this c1897 picture shows a Chicago squad at a time when the game was a winter cousin of outdoor baseball. Indoor baseball was played with a larger, softer ball in gymnasiums and armories, and Chicago was one of its early centers. The copyright registration in the name of X.O. Howe preserves a record of the sport before it developed into softball.
