Chicago's indoor baseball team, photographed around 1897, is believed by baseball historian Paul Dickson to be the first photograph ever taken of an indoor baseball team. Indoor baseball was a winter game played in gymnasiums and armories with a larger, softer ball than outdoor baseball, which let teams keep playing when the weather turned cold. The catalog record labels the players "softball," but the game is indoor baseball, a precursor of the later softball. The print was registered for copyright by the photographer X.O. Howe.
