Taken at the Fulton Street studio of Gardner & Co., this 1889 group portrait records a Brooklyn club during the decade when professional baseball was growing into a major business. Studio team portraits like this one were often sold to fans and used for promotion, so the players appear posed and formal rather than in action. Brooklyn was then a separate city across the East River from Manhattan, and its ballclub drew real crowds in a rivalry with New York teams. The record names no individual players, but the picture shows how these athletes presented themselves to the public in the late 1880s.
