The West-side indoor base ball team of Owosso, Michigan, calls itself the "World's champions" for 1905-1906, a boast that was common among amateur clubs of the period. Indoor base ball was a winter version of the outdoor game, played in halls and armories on a smaller field with a softer ball, and it drew local teams into friendly rivalries and challenge matches. The photograph was registered for copyright around 1906, which helps explain why it survives as a dated group portrait of these players.
