The Brooklyn club pictured here is the team that would soon be known as the Brooklyn Bridegrooms and later the Dodgers, and the spelling "Base Ball" in the title reflects how the sport was still written in the late 1880s. By 1889 the franchise was one of the strongest in the National League, and the team had won the pennant the year before. Posed portraits like this one were common for clubs of the era, often sold as cards or prints to fans who followed the players by name. Look closely at the uniforms and caps, which show the plainer, more utilitarian style of the period before the modern look took hold.
