Unlike most WPA posters, which promoted concerts, classes, or public health campaigns, this 1940 silkscreen advertises a book: a account of Black American progress over 75 years, a span that reaches back to emancipation in 1865. The Federal Art Project sponsored it, and its flat, bold color fields show the silkscreen method the program used to make inexpensive posters that could be produced in quantity. The title's word "cavalcade" points to the design's approach, which presents history as a parade of events and people moving forward.
