The poster advertises the Hollywood Playhouse and invites Los Angeles audiences to "ride the big red cars," a nod to the Pacific Electric Railway's red streetcars that carried riders across the region. Its "two a day" billing points to the twice-daily schedule of vaudeville, a format that was losing ground to motion pictures and radio by the late 1930s. The Federal theater Project, a New Deal program that put unemployed theater workers back on stage, sponsored the show. Its silkscreen color and bold lettering are typical of the WPA poster studios, which made low-cost publicity for government-funded arts projects.
