Two men who held the Union's fate in 1862 stand together inside McClellan's field tent, a rare glimpse of the army's command life away from the battlefield. The record dates the scene to September 17, 1862, the day of the battle of Antietam, but Lincoln did not visit McClellan's camp near Sharpsburg until early October, so the date is worth checking. The stereo card format, viewed through a stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect, brought scenes like this into parlors during the war.
