A small sixteenth-plate daguerreotype shows Emily Abbot Everett, identified by the label inside its case as Mrs. Stevens Everett, posed bust-length and turned toward the right. Daguerreotypes, introduced in 1839, were one-of-a-kind positives made on silvered copper, and their mirror-like surfaces could be seen clearly only at certain angles. The sixteenth-plate size was among the smallest common formats, sealed in a plain leather case like this one with its push button, and it was meant to be held and kept close. The portrait came to the Library of Congress in 2004 as part of the Henry L. Abbot family papers, so it survives as a family possession as well as a photographic object.
