This drawing reduces the composer to a few confident strokes of brush and ink, with white highlights laid over a faint pencil underdrawing, a technique typical of Miguel Covarrubias's caricatures. Covarrubias, a Mexican artist who drew for *Vanity Fair* in the 1920s, specialized in exaggerating the distinctive features of writers, performers and musicians. This sheet was later reproduced in a 1985 Smithsonian Institution Press book on his caricatures, under the heading "Prodigious figures in the world of music." Stravinsky, born in Russia in 1882, had caused a sensation with *The Rite of Spring* in Paris in 1913, and by 1925 he was one of the most talked-about composers in Europe, making him a natural subject for a caricaturist.
