The title names a Lamaist pagoda, a label older Western writers applied to Tibetan Buddhist religious buildings in China and Mongolia. The record links the drawing to a 19th-century album of Russian drawings of China, later held in the Gennadii Vasilevich Yudin collection, though its date between 1860 and 1910 is only an estimate. Russian travelers and artists of that era often sketched temples and monasteries along their routes, recording religious architecture that few Western observers had seen. The caption card's tags for geography, religion and architecture suggest the picture was meant as a record of a sacred site and its design.
