Mikhail Skobelev, named on this card, was a Russian general whose daring campaigns in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 and later in Central Asia made him one of the most celebrated soldiers of his day. Admirers called him the White General for the white uniform he often wore, and his likeness circulated widely in the illustrated press of the period. This print is a halftone reproduction of an earlier photoprint, so its soft tonal range reflects the mechanical printing methods of the time as well as the original sitter. The caption card gives no date and its other details are unverified, so the moment the portrait was made remains uncertain.
