Rudy Vallee, the bandleader and crooner who became a radio favorite in the late 1920s, is the subject here, drawn in color by Miguel Covarrubias. The caricature appeared in 1930 as an illustration for John Riddell's detective novel *The John Riddell Murder Case*, published that year by Charles Scribner's Sons. Covarrubias, a Mexican artist working in New York, was known for exaggerated, elegant portraits of celebrities for magazines like *Vanity Fair*, and his sharp lines turn the singer's features into a playful, instantly recognizable likeness.
