Kwajalein Atoll, in the Marshall Islands, is the place this print records, and its caption card dates the picture to February 3, 1944, in the middle of the American assault on the atoll. U.S. Marines and Army troops fought there in the first days of February as part of the drive across the central Pacific, and the battle ended within about a week. The caption card's tracings point to Army units, eating, and death, though the record notes that these details are unverified. Those themes suggest a scene of soldiers at rest or a moment of wartime routine, and the image is worth viewing as a record of ordinary life during a brutal campaign.
