The scratched number 1535 in the emulsion is the most distinctive mark on this untitled glass negative, a catalog-style notation that helped keep a photographer's output in order. It dates to 1860, the year before the Civil War began, and was made with the wet collodion process, in which a glass plate had to be coated, exposed, and developed while still wet. The work is credited to David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, and it now belongs to a Civil War glass negative collection at the Library of Congress. The record does not describe the scene itself, but the prewar date places it in the years when American photography was expanding quickly.
