This untitled image is a glass negative made in 1860, the year before the Civil War began, so it dates from the uneasy months when sectional tensions were rising but fighting had not yet started. It was produced by the wet collodion process, in which a photographer coated a glass plate, exposed it, and developed it while the emulsion was still wet, a method that gave sharp detail but demanded speed and careful handling in the field. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, is credited with the plate, which belongs to a larger group of Civil War-era glass negatives held by the Library of Congress. Because its record does not name the scene, the image is best understood as a document of its moment, when photography was becoming a common way to record public life.
