What sets this item apart is that it is the glass negative itself rather than a print: a single plate made by David B. Woodbury, a photographer who died in 1866. Wet collodion plates like this one were coated, sensitized, and exposed while still moist, a demanding method that dominated photography from the early 1850s into the 1880s. The date of 1860 falls before the war began in April 1861, so the plate's place in the Civil War collection reflects how the holdings were gathered rather than a wartime subject. Because it is untitled, the record does not describe the scene, so its meaning rests largely on the collection it belongs to.
