Little about this picture survives in its record beyond its date and maker: an untitled 1862 image made as a wet collodion glass negative by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866. Wet collodion plates had to be coated, exposed, and developed while still damp, so photographers prepared each one just before making the exposure, a demanding routine in the field. The Library of Congress holds it within a glass negative collection documenting the Civil War years, 1861 to 1865. Many negatives from this period lack titles, so the image's date, maker, and collection provide most of its context.
