Buffalo in 1902 was still living in the afterglow of the Pan-American Exposition, which had opened in May 1901 on the grounds north of the city and drew millions of visitors before closing that November. President William McKinley was shot at the exposition's Temple of Music that September and died days later, a grief that marked the whole city. By 1902 the population had passed 350,000, and the exposition site was being cleared and reconsidered as parkland. Steelmaking was moving to the shore of Lake Erie just south of the city, where the Lackawanna works were rising, promising a new kind of industry beside the older grain and shipping trade. Buffalo residents would have known their city as a lake port with ambitions for something larger.
