Brooklyn in 1897 was still a separate city, though its consolidation with Manhattan was only months away when this view was drawn. By the 1890 census it had passed 800,000 residents, ranking third among American cities, a point local boosters repeated often. Its neighborhoods had spread well beyond the old Dutch farm villages of Flatbush and Bushwick, with rows of brownstones and frame houses filling the blocks between them. Streetcars and elevated lines carried clerks and laborers to downtown offices and factories, while Greenwood Cemetery and the beaches at Coney Island drew families on summer weekends.
