Buffalo in 1880 was one of the great grain and lumber cities of the Great Lakes, its economy built on the Erie Canal's terminus and the lake trade that moved wheat from the upper Midwest eastward. Grain elevators and milling operations lined the waterfront, and the city's flour mills were among the largest in the country. Railroads converged on the harbor, carrying freight and passengers, and the population had climbed past 100,000 during the preceding decade as immigrants from Germany, Ireland, and Eastern Europe arrived to work the docks, mills, and rail yards. Locals in 1880 knew the city for its commerce and its growing German community, and the bird's-eye view reflects a settlement at the height of its water-borne prosperity.
