Broadalbin, in Fulton County in the hills north of the Mohawk Valley, was a farming village in 1880, and its town had been settled in the late 1700s. Local life centered on dairy and grain farms, along with small mills and shops that served the surrounding countryside. Nearby Gloversville and Johnstown were then the center of the region's glove and leather trades, and those industries drew workers, money, and trade from villages like Broadalbin. In 1880, residents would have known their village mainly for its churches, schools, and busy main street, and for its role as a market town for the farms around it.
