Rochester, New York, in 1880 was a city of roughly 90,000 people built along the Genesee River, where the falls powered the flour mills that had earned it the nickname "Flour City." Wheat from surrounding farms moved through the mills and along the Erie Canal, while nurseries and seed houses sent the name "Flower City" far beyond the state. Clothing makers, machine shops, and the optical works of Bausch & Lomb filled the streets near the river and the rail lines running through the valley. Residents would also have known the city for its reform movements, since Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony had both made their homes there.
