Bud (William) Fields, Lilian Rogers Fields, and Lily Fields appear together in this group portrait, presenting the household as a unit. The family were sharecroppers in Alabama's cotton country, tenants who worked land owned by others and paid their rent from the harvest, an arrangement that kept many rural families in debt through the 1930s. Walker Evans made the picture for the Resettlement Administration, the New Deal agency that documented rural poverty to build support for farm relief. The record dates it to 1935 or 1936, and it belongs to a series Evans made of the family's house and daily life.
